Red Knights honored at Jax Cafe bruncheon

BSM'S 2016-17 Award Winners

The Benilde-St. Margaret's boys hockey team held its annual awards banquet at Jax Cafe in Minneapolis.

Below is a recap of the team's 2016-17 award winners.


Brian Arnold -- Best Defensive Forward

After not playing in the Red Knight program a year ago, Arnold proved to be a capable player at both defense and forward in his only season of varsity hockey.

All three of Arnold's goals were the first goals of the game and came in three BSM wins, including a 3-2 win over Section 6AA champion Wayzata as well as the team's final two games of the regular season.

He was second among the team's forward, averaging 2:05 of ice time on the penalty kill while averaging 17:29 of total ice time.


Ian Bahr -- Andrew Alberts Most Improved Player

The sophomore winger missed the final five games of the regular season due to injury but managed to share the team lead in power-play goals (3) while tallying five goals and 10 points on the season.

Bahr's rookie campaign saw him average 15:09 of ice time per game, including 1:55 of power-play time.

He kicked off his Red Knight career by scoring three points in his first five games, including goals against state-tournament participants Hill-Murray and Eden Prairie.


Alex Brigino -- Vic St. Martin Coaches Award

Brigino's perseverance and dedication to the team made him a co-winner of this year's Vic St. Martin Coaches Award.

The senior was a varsity goalie for the first time during his three seasons in the Red Knights program. He saw action in six games and made three starts.

Brigino made a career-best, and team season-high, 41 saves in a loss at 11th-ranked Minnetonka and averaged just over 29 saves per 51 minutes played.


Nate Clark -- 2017-18 Team Captain

The junior defenseman was unassuming and unheralded during the 2016-17 season but his teammates took note of his contributions by voting him as team captain for 2017-18.

In his first varsity season, Clark saw 18:28 of ice time per game and saw significant playing time on both the power play and penalty kill as well.

One of just seven Red Knights players to see action in all 26 games this season, he registered five assists and blocked 21 shots.


Joe Collins -- Honorable Mention All-Metro West Conference, Leading Goal Scorer, 2017-18 Assistant Team Captain

The season started slowly for Collins, who failed to register a point in his first four games before being diagnosed with mononucleosis, forcing him to miss another month.

After regaining his health, he led the team in scoring over the final 16 games of the campaign, registering 18 points, including 12 goals, which led the team for the season. He also shared the team lead with three power-play goals.

During his surge in the season's second half, he had multiple points in five consecutive games and 11 of his 12 goals came in the final 10 games of the season.

 


Zach Everett -- All Metro-West Conference

Everett joined the Red Knight program for his season year and won the number goaltending position, seeing action in 20 of 26 games, including 19 starts.

In Metro West Conference play, Everett went 4-1-0 with one shutout while posting a 1.41 goals against average and a .930 saver percentage.

In his five conference games, Everett did not allow more than three goals in a game and in four of the five games he allowed two or fewer goals.

Overall, he topped the 30-save mark on five occasions, including a career-best 40-save effort in a loss to Moorhead, Dec. 30.


Dylan Hoen -- Leading Scorer, Most Assists, All-Metro West Conference

Hoen proved to be BSM's steadiest offensive player, sharing the team lead with 15 assists while leading the team with 21 points an proving to be an adept centerman, winning a team-high 315 faceoffs with a team-best 59.5 faceoff percentage.

He saw just over 20 minutes of ice time per game as the team's top centerman and saw significant playing time on both the penalty-kill and power-play units.

Hoen did his best work offensively down the stretch as he scored four goals and 11 points in his final nine.


Max Jablonski -- Jack Jablonski Most Determined Player

In his first varsity season, Jablonski was named a team captain for his off-season efforts in preparing himself and his team for the 2016-17 season.

Earning the team award named after his older brother, Jablonski proved to be a tireless worker with a team-first attitude.

Off the ice, he was an influential team leader in the locker room who led both vocally and by example.

On the ice, he tallied three goals and 11 points and his 148 faceoff wins were second on the team.


Bronson McLeod -- Best Defenseman, Most Assists, All-Metro West Conference

The team leader in ice time, averaging more than 25 minutes per game, McLeod was chosen by his teammates as the team's top defenseman.

He shared the team lead with 15 assists and tied for second in shot attempts (139), shots on goal (70) and blocked shots (23).

In conference play, his 10 assists were tops among the Red Knights and he shared the team lead with 12 points.

McLeod also finished his career having played in 104 varsity games over the course of four seasons.


Michael McNeil -- Honorable Mention All Metro-West Conference

McNeil shared the team lead in conference scoring, tallying four goals and 12 points, and was +11 in seven games.

He tallied two goals and a team season-high, and career-best, six points in a win at Bloomington Kennedy, Jan. 28.

A swing man for the Red Knights who played both forward and defense, he tallied goals in each of the final two games of the season and had four points in the final three games.

He was also one of just two regulars in the BSM lineup to post a positive plus/minus rating on the season, finishing at +1.


Peyton Melin -- Vic St. Martin Coaches Award

Melin shared the Vic St. Martin Coaches Award with his goaltending partner of the last three years, Alex Brigino for much the same reason, putting the team first and persevering while sharing the team's backup duties.

Melin's first varsity win came in his second start as he made 14 saves in a 2-1 win over Hopkins, Dec. 17.

He also earned a tie in his first conference start, making 25 saves in a 3-3 tie at Chanhassen.


Peter Moran -- Hobey Baker Character Award

Moran was leading the team with seven goals on the season when his season was cut short after playing 13 games when he suffered a broken leg during a January practice.

Moran was a key special teams player for the Red Knights who averaged over 20 minutes of ice time per game at forward.

He was voted as a team captain following his junior season and proceeded to lead the team by example with his work effort and play on the ice.

Five of his goals came in the first five games of the season, including the overtime winner in a 4-3 victory over Duluth Marshall, Dec. 2.


Jerome Newhouse -- 2017-17 Assistant Team Captain

Newhouse led the team with 39 blocked shots and, after spending the majority of the season on the blueline, made the move to right win during BSM's stretch run.

He tallied a goal and five points while playing in all 26 games and averaging 17:30 of ice time per game.

He will be the second member of his family to wear a captain's letter on his sweating, joining his brother, Ben '15, who served as both an assistant captain and co-captain.


Nick Sims -- All Metro-West Conference

A co-captain who played through a knee injury throughout his senior campaign, Sims was a vital player for the Red Knights as he switched between center and defense throughout the season, as team needs dictated.

He led the team in shot attempts (146), shots on goal (176), power-play assists (8) and power-play points (10) while ranking second in points (20).

Sims was the only player on this year's squad with three varsity seasons as a Red Knight under his belt.
