Mortenson's short-handed tally gives BSM tie with Thunderhawks.

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. -- Jonah Mortenson's second short-handed goal in as many games tied the score early in the third period and Benilde-St. Margaret's earned a 2-2 tie with Grand Rapids.

Special teams played a key role in the Red Knights being able to earn the draw with the Thunderhawks but it didn't appear that would be the case early in the game.

The Thunderhawks grabbed a 1-0 lead, six minutes, 13 seconds into the game when they tallied on a 5-on-3 power play but it was the only goal BSM would allow on seven power-play chances by the hosts.

The Red Knights even the game just past the six-minute mark of the second period when Axel Toft scored on BSM's lone power-play opportunity but, when it appeared the teams would head into the final period tied, Grand Rapids scored with 18 seconds remaining in the middle period.

Just 24 seconds into the final period, Toft was called for interference and the Thunderhawks went on their fifth power play of the game.

This time, however, it was the Red Knights who scored as Mortenson, who scored the game-winner at Marshall last night, got the game-tying goal when he scored 1:41 into the third period.

Jonathan Vitelli backstopped the Red Knights with a 19-save effort, which included five stops in the five-minute overtime.

BSM is back in action, Tuesday, when it will be at Lakeville North for a 5 p.m. faceoff with the Panthers.

Axel Toft scored on the power-play to tie the game at 1-1.
