Benilde-St. Margaret's Boys' Hockey

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's racked up its highest shot toal in nearly five years and rolled to a 5-0 win over defending state Class AA champion Grand Rapids.

The Red Knights outshot the Thunderhawks, 63-3, their highest total since putting up 68 in a win over Rochester Century, Jan. 17, 2013.

BSM did not allow a shot on goal in the opening period while tallying 24 of its own. However, Gabe Holum kept the Red Knights at bay until Dylan Hoen took a Nate Schweitzer pass at the red line, broke into the Thunderhawk zone from the left side and scored low on Holum's glove side with one minute, nine seconds remaining in the first period.

Holum continued to thwart BSM in the second period as the Red Knights, despite a 16-3 advantage in shots in the middle stanza, failed to get on the scoreboard again until 3:59 remained, when Joe Collins forced a turnover at his own blue line, carried the puck up the left side and broke towards the net from the left faceoff circle.

His initial shot was stopped by Holum but, when the Thunderhawk netminder bobled the puck, Collins knocked it out of midair and into the net.

It would take just 56 seconds for BSM to expand that lead when Matt Kocourek banged home a Michael McNeil rebound to send the game into the final period with the Red Knights holding a 3-0 lead.

The final period saw BSM outshoot Grand Rapids, 23-0, but a pair of goals, 31 seconds apart, would be all that the Red Knights could garner.

Collins scored his second of the game, 7:15 into the final frame, when Hoen kicked the puck free from behind the Thunderhawk net. Collins crashed the slot and banged home a one-time shot for his third goal of the season.

Jerome Newhouse then got on the scoresheet when he stuffed home a loose puck during a scramble on the left side of the Grand Rapids goal.

Five different Red Knights tallied a pair of points in the game. Collins had two goals while Hoen, Kocourek and Newhouse each had a goal and an assist while McNeil added two assists.

Carson Limesand needed to make just three saves to earn both his first varsity win and shutout.

BSM returns to action, Tuesday, when the Red Knights travel to Lakeville for a 7 p.m. match up with 15th-ranked Lakeville North.
