EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Benilde-St. Margaret's junior varsity opened the North-South Classic by falling 5-1 to Brainerd but, after a slow start the following day, managed a 7-3 win over Hermantown for a split of its weekend series.

Despite outshooting Brainerd, Friday, it was the Warriors scoring five goals in the second and third periods to put the game away.

Cooper Gay ended the Red Knights' drought when he scored a power-play goal with 45 seconds to play in the game.

Once again, BSM struggled out of the gate, Saturday, as the Red Knights fell behind, 3-0, giving up a pair of short-handed goals in the game's opening 13:45.

Gay dug BSM out of the hole by scoring twice in the final 2:10 of the opening period and his third power-play goal of the weekend, 3:28 into the second period, completed his hat trick and tied the scored at 3-3.

Axel Toft picked up four assists in the win over Hermantown.

Jonathan Vitelli stopped the final 13 shots he faced to earn the win over Hermantown.

He then set up the eventual game-winning goal by assisting on Logan Lyke's short-handed goal just over two minutes later.

Will Thompson and Dylan McNulty would add goals before the end of the middle stanza to send the Red Knights into the final period with a 6-3 lead and Gay added his fourth goal of the game, 4:48 into the third period.

After giving up three goals on the Hawks' first 10 shots, Jonathan Vitelli stopped the final 13 shots he faced to earn a 20-save victory.

After six consecutive games away from home to open the season, BSM comes home to the St. Louis Park Recreation Center, Tuesday, for a 5 p.m. game with St. Thomas Academy.
