Late goal allows St. Louis Park to upend BSM

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's took an early lead but a late goal, with 23.9 seconds to play, by St. Louis Park brought the Red Knights' season to an end in a 2-1 loss in the Section 6AA quarterfinals.

Just four minutes, 31 seconds into the game, Jonah Mortenson's pass from the right corner found Jett Johnson alone in the slot and the junior center quickly buried his fourth goal of the season.

However, it was the only goal the Red Knights would scored on the Orioles' William Pinney.

The lead held up for more than 22 minutes before Riley Dvorak scored a power-play to tie the game at 1-1 in a period when SLP held a 15-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The third period got rough and featured four power-play opportunities, three of which belonged to the Red Knights, and matching major penalties.

BSM's inability to capitalize on those three power-play chances would prove costly when Jonathan Sorenson knocked home a loose puck during a goalmouth scramble with 23.9 seconds to play in the game.

The game was highlighted by the play of two young goalies in Pinney, a sophomore, and BSM freshman Carson Limesand.

Pinney turned aside 27 shots to earn the victory while Limesand made 30 saves while suffering the loss.

While BSM's season ends with a 12-12-2 record, St. Louis Park moves on to face second-ranked Edina, the top seed in Section 6AA, Saturday in a 7 p.m. semifinal game.

Jett Johnson scored the game's first goal to give BSM a 1-0 lead.
