Red Knights hand out awards at annual banquet

Championship season comes to close with awards banquet

The Benilde-St. Margaret's 2011-12 boys hockey season, which ended last Saturday with the program's first Class AA state championship, cmae to a close with the team's annual awards banquet, held at Jax Cafe in Minneapolis.

Following opening introduction, Red Knight junior varsity coach Chris McGowan handed out certificates to JV players and three individual awards.

The team's Most Improved Player Award went to Jack Sims, the Sportsmanship Award was given to Mikey Lamb and the Coaches' Award was presented to Tanner Ahlborn.

In the varsity portion of the program, North Suburban Conference Academic Awards were given to Alec Anderson and Jake Horton. Honorable mention all-conference honors went to Tyler Ellegard, Patrick Graham, Anders Jecha and Jonah Johnson while all-conference awards were bestowed upon Grant Besse, Christian Horn, Jake Horton, Dan Labosky, T.J. Moore and Jake O'Borsky.

The All Star Sport Academic Award, for the player with the highest grade point average on the varsity team, went to Ben Newhouse, who also earned the Andrew Alberts Most Improved Player Award.

Horton received the team's Hobey Baker Character Award, Anderson was named the Vic St. Martin Coaches' Award winner, Graham earned the team's Best Defenseman Award and Ellegard was honored with the team's Best Defensive Forward Award.

Leading scorer awards went to Besse (goals and points) and Labosky (assists) while Horton, Labosky and Moore were cited for joining BSM's 100-point club for their careers and Horn became the charter member of the team's 200-point club.

The banquet was highlighted by the introduction of Jack Jablonski. The team's Most Determined Player Award has been renamed for Jablonski and he was on hand to present the first Jack Jablonski Most Determined Player Award to Moore.

BSM JV uses power play in season-ending win

Lundberg's goaltending, three PP goals lead to victory for Red Knights.

Benilde-St. Margaret's scored three power-play goals, two in a 26-second span of the second period and Paul Lundberg earned a shutout as the Red Knights wrapped up the 2011-12 season with a 4-0 win over Stillwater.

Despite outshooting the Ponies, 17-2, in the opening period, BSM managed to get just one goal on the scorebard when Nate Meyer scored at six minutes, 23 seconds of the opening period.

It was the only goal of the opening period and it would take BSM nearly 19 minutes before scoring again.

Back-to-back major penalties on Stillwater set up the Red Knights with a 5-on-3 power with 5:11 to play in the period and, just 12 seconds later, Chris Hickok found the back of the net to get the hosts.

BSM remained on the 5-on-3 power play and, 26 seconds later, is was Tanner Ahlborn who got the puck past Ponies' goalie Colton Anderson for a 3-0 lead.

The Red Knights' final goal was also a power-play marker as they got the man advantage with 6:44 to play and it took just seven seconds for Zach Gionet to win a faceoff back to Jack Lawton, who moved the puck across the points to Matt Mogensen, who got the puck back to Gionet for the game's fourth goal.

Stillwater held a 9-7 edge in shots on goal in the final period, thanks to 7:51 of power-play time which resulted in seven of those shots.

Lundberg recorded his ninth win and second shutout of the season by stopping all 15 shots he faced in the victory.

Lamb, Ahlborn get hat tricks in victory

Mikey Lamb recorded a natural hat trick, Tanner Ahlborn also turned in a three-goal effort, and Benilde-St. Margaret's cruised to a 12-1 win at Chisago Lakes in its final North Suburban Conference game of the season.

Ahlborn scored three goals in the opening period, getting his second and third goals just 12 seconds apart with one minutes, 14 seconds to play in the opening frame.

Evan Fleming opened the second period by scoring two goals 11 seconds apart in the first 78 seconds of the frame.

Lamb began his natural hat trick just 44 seconds after Fleming's second goal and it took him 4:23 to complete the feat.

Both Ahlborn and Lamb added an assist while Danny Liberko had four assists and Nate Meyer added a goal and three assists, giving BSM four players with four points on the night.

Twelve of the Red Knights' 13 skaters recorded points in the game, as did goalie Will Jarvis, who ran his record to 10-0-1 on the season with the victory.

BSM wraps up the 2011-12 campaign at home, Saturday, with a 12:30 p.m. game versus Stillwater.
