Benilde-St. Margaret's junior right wing Grant Besse, who became the school's all-time leading goal scorer last week, earned three prestigious honors for his nine-goal, 11-point performance in two wins last week.
For his efforts, Besse was name the KARE 11 Athlete of the Week (http://www.kare11.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=960687) as well as earning a St. Paul Pioneer Press playmaker of the week award (http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_19904966) and the Minnesota Sports Online Hardware Hank Nuts and Bolt Metro Athlete of the Week honor (http://www.minnesotasportsonline.com/newsarticle.php?yid=&nid=52583).
The Pioneer Press honor is Besse's second of the season from the newspaper and third of his career.
Besse earned the honors after establishing a new BSM record for career goals, getting his 88th, in a five-goal performance in a 7-1 win at Bloomington Jefferson.
Saturday, he scored four goals and added two assists in a 15-0 win over Spring Lake Park while logging just nine minutes, 42 seconds of ice time.
He ended last week with 33 goals and 63 points in 20 games on the season, having scored points in every game this season and 19 goals during a seven-game goal scoring streak.
Justin Quale turned in stellar relief effort, stopping all 14 Wayzata shots in the third period as eighth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's overcame a pair of one-goal deficits to earn a 4-3 win over ninth-ranked Wayzata.
The Trojans took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Matt Halverson scored nine minutes, 12 seconds into the contest and they held that lead for just over 15 minutes.
BSM tied the game when Grant Besse scored from the right side of the net at 7:35 of the second period but it took the hosts less than a minute to regain the one-goal lead as Brock Sorenson's shot found its way through Anders Jecha's skates and Red Knight head coach Ken Pauly made the goaltending change at that point.
Less than two minutes later, at 10:19, T.J. Moore took a pass in the left circle from Christian Horn, fed a hard pass across the slot to Besse and the Red Knight scoring phenom slammed home his 35th goal of the season from the bottom of the right circle.
The goal set off a mini scoring spree for BSM, which found itself leading 4-2 less than four minutes later as Jack Glover buried a Horn rebound to give the visitors their first lead and, with 3:10 to play in the period, Horn capped a three-point night by taking a Dan Labosky pass and finding the back of the net.
Horn's goal forced the Trojans to call a timeout and, just 20 seconds later, Kevin Miller cut the lead to one goal but it was the only time they would get a puck past Quale.
Despite being outshot, 14-3, in the final period, BSM had dominated the second period and held a 16-5 advantage in shots on goal, finish the game with a 28-25 edge.
The Red Knights are in action again Wednesday when they take on Shattuck-St. Mary's in a 7:30 p.m. game at SSM Arena.
Paul Lundberg made a career-high 35 saves but a power-play goal with just under 11 minutes to play by Wayzata's Alex Waszczenko broke a scoreless tie and enabled the Trojans to garner a 1-0 win over Benilde-St. Maragaret's.
After two scoreless periods in which the home team carried much of the play, Wayzata dominated the final period, outshooting the Red Knights, 18-5.
BSM had pulled Lundberg for an extra attacker in the final minutes of the game but a tripping call against the Red Knights forced the Red Knights to return him to the net and the Trojans held on over the final 78 seconds.
After the two teams skated to a 3-3 tie in the championship game of the Holiday Hockey Classic, before BSM won the title in a shootout, Wayzata had a dominant 36-14 advantage in shots on goal.
The Red Knights return to action, Wednesday, with a road game in Faribault, Minn., when they take on Shattuck-St. Mary's in a 5:30 p.m. game.
