Red Knights fall in season opener to Thunderhawks

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's got goals from Leo Warner and Ryan Sever to tie the game at 3-3 but Grand Rapids scored the game's final three goals to post a 7-4 win in the season opener for both teams.

Both teams scored short-handed goals in the opening period but a pair of Kodi Miller goals enabled the Thunderwayks to take a 3-2 lead.

Ryan Gearen scored the Red Knights' short-handed goal, unassisted, and A.J. Pauly scored with 25 seconds remaining in the period to make it a one-goal game.

The hosts scored two minutes, 22 seconds into the second period but goals by Leio Warner and Ryan Sever, just over three minutes apart, to tie the score with with 8:14 to play in the stanza.

Wyatt Holcomb scored the second of his three goals, 37 seconds after Sever tied the score, and a pair of late third-period goals but the game away for Grand Rapids.

After holding a 17-16 edge in shots on goal through two periods, BSM was outshot, 14-7, in the final period for a 30-24 total in favor of the Thunderhawks.

Sam Schumacher recorded 23 save in his Red Knight debut.

BSM returns to action, Monday, when it opens the home portion of its schedule with a 5 p.m. game versus Edina at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center.
