Grand Rapids scored 15 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead, which it would not relinquish.

GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. -- Two years ago, Grand Rapids came off a state championship and won just six games.

At the same time, Benilde-St. Margaret's struggled to a .500 record, finishing 12-12-2.

This year, both teams have returned to prominence with the Red Knights being ranked third to start the season, and the Thunderhawks 11th.

The two teams put on a high-tempo game Saturday afternoon at the IRA Civic Center with the hosts posting a 4-2 upset of the Red Knights.

BSM struck first when Grant Ellings scored his second goal in two nights by rushing two-thirds the length of the ice before snapping off a shot from the left faceoff circle that beat Thunderhawk goalie Carter Clafton on the short side.

The hosts scored on the power-play with five minutes, 30 seconds to play in the opening period to tie the game but it was two goals in the second period that made the difference.

A turnover near the BSM blueline allowed John Bonner to come down the middle and get off a shot which Charlie Frattalone stopped. However, he was unable to control the rebound and Brandon Goehring was able to poke home the loose puck for a 2-1 lead.

The Red Knights won the ensuing faceoff but another turnover allowed Grand Rapids to gain possession at their own blueline along the right-wing boards.

Adam Marshall scored his third goal in two nights.

Hunter Bischoff carried the puck up the right side, patiently waited for a Red Knight to defenseman to slide past and then slid a centering pass to Maccrea Murphy for a tip-in goal just 15 seconds after the hosts had taken a 2-1 lead.

Adam Marshall would cut the lead to one goal when he tipped a James Callahan power-play shot from the left point with 2:21 remaining in the middle period.

BSM, which held a 39-25 advantage in shots on goal, outshot its host, 16-8 in the final period but could not get the equalizer and Jack Peart sealed the win for the Thunderhawks when he scored his second goal of the game, into an empty net, with 54 seconds to play.

The Red Knights will play their third game in four days when they return to the St. Louis Park Recreation Center for a 7 p.m. game against sixth-ranked and defending state champion Edina.
