Pauly collects 500th career win with victory over Jefferson.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's broke open a 1-1 tie with three second-period goals and handed head coach Ken Pauly his 500th career win as the 11th-ranked Red Knights opened Metro West Conference play with a 6-3 win at Bloomington Jefferson.

As he often has, senior co-captain Nate Schweitzer led the way, opening the scoring with a blast from the left circle, six minutes, 25 seconds into the game, the first of his three points in the game.

The Jaguars would score a little more than two minutes later to send the game into the first intermission tied, 1-1, before BSM scored three goals in a span of 4:21 in the second period.

Jefferson held a 15-11 edge in shots on goal in the middle stanza but it was Jonah Mortenson's shot from the slot with 7:48 to play in the period which put the Red Knights on top for good.

Less than a minute later, Charlie Bischel poked home a loose puck and, with 3:17 to play, Blake Mesenburg banged home a rebound for a 4-1 Red Knight lead.

The hosts cut into that lead with a power-play goal just 28 seconds into the final period but James Callahan matched that with a power-play goal of his own, three minutes later.

The Jaguards would pull to within two goals again with three minutes to play in the game but Mortenson sealed the win when he took a pass from Cooper Gay and broke into the Jefferson zone before depositing the puck into an empty net with 1:31 remaining in the game.

Gay's assist on the final goal was his third of the game, marking a career high and giving him 17 points on the season, good for second on the team.

Carson Limesand, starting his 12th consecutive game, stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced as the Red Knights had a 45-33 advantage in shots on goal.

Next up for the Red Knights is a 2:30 p.m. tilt at home versus MWC foe Chaska at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Jonah Mortenson scored two goals, giving him six goals in his last six games.
