BSM remains unbeaten with win over Zephyrs

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Tristan Sarsland scored the game's first goal, for the second time in three games this season, and Adam Marshall added his second game-winning goal of the season as Benilde-St. Margaret's defeated defending Class A state champion, Mahtomedi, 3-2.

The game went nearly 16 minutes without a goal before a faceoff win by Ryan Gearen was tipped back to Sarsland at the left point. He put the puck behind the net, where Michael Risteau won a battle along the boards and pass the puck back to Sarsland, who stepped up to the top of the slot and beat the Zephyrs' Ben Dardis past his right skate.

The Red Knight defense accounted for the second goal as Grant Ellings back-checked the puck loose near the Mahtomedi blue. Ben Thompson collected the puck and moved it across the neutral zone to Brady Yakesh on the left side. The junior assistant captain then skated into the offensive zone and snapped off his second goal of the season from the left circle.

With four minutes, 40 seconds to play in the middle period, Marshall got the puck from Sarsland and found the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.

Mahtomedi came to life when J.D. Metz scored with 25 seconds to play in the middle frame and Ethan Peterson made it a one-goal game at 2:49 of the final period.

From there, the Red Knights clamped down defensively, allowing just one more shot on goal from that point to secure their third win of the season.

Adam Marshall scored his second game-winning goal of the season.

BSM had a 31-19 advantage in shots on goal. Five Red Knights record four shots while Carson Limesand made 17 saves. With the win, he moved into second on the Red Knights' all-time win list with 43, eight shy of Jake Schuman's record of 51.

Up next for BSM is a match up with 2000 Section 6AA champion, Blake, as the Red Knights take to the road for the first time this season to face the team that beat them in overtime to advance to the Class AA state tournament. Game time at Blake Arena in Hopkins is slated for 5:30 p.m.
