Red Knights open with three-goal lead en route to 5-3 win.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's jumped out to a three-goal lead in the game's first six minutes and Brennan Chapman backstopped the offensive with a 29-save effort as the Red Knights junior varsity claimed a 5-3 win over Wayzata.

Off the opening faceoff, Ben Norris grabbed a loose puck at the Trojans' blueline and skated in on goalie Jon Hanson before snapping off a shot resulting in a 1-0 BSM lead just 10 seconds into the game.

Norris and Max Wendt, who took the faceoff leading to the opening goal, combined to set up A.J. Pauly to give the Red Knights a 2-0 lead just over three minutes later.

At the 5:46 mark, Peter Giertsen intercepted a puck while killing a penalty and scored short handed to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Peter Giertsen scored short handed and set up two other goals to lead BSM.

However, the Trojans made use of the five-minute power play on which Giertsen scored, following up with two goals of their own to send the game into the second period trailing by just one at 3-2.

A pair of late goals in the second period would send the game into the second intermission as a one-goal game as well.

Ryan Baird made it 4-2 with 4:02 to play in the middle stanza but, with 57 second remaining, Wayzata got that goal back and trailed by one once again.

BSM would dominate the third period holding a 17-7 advantage in shots on goal while getting Quinn Schliesman's team-leading 21st goal just 1:26 into the session.

After being out shot, 25-19, in the first two period, in which Chapman made 22 saves, the Red Knights finished with a 36-32 edge for the game as Chapman collected his fifth win of the season with his season-high 29 saves.

BSM was scheduled to close out the season tomorrow at Holy Family but the game has been cancelled and the Red Knights will face Eden Prairie, Saturday, at 6:45 p.m. at the Eden Prairie Community Center.
