PLYMOUTH, Minn. -- As it often does, the meeting between fourth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's and No. 11 Wayzata came down to defense and capitalizing on a chance.
The Trojans' Luke Miller shot wide of the net but caught his own rebound, two minutes, seven seconds into overtime, and placed the puck in between goalie Mason McElroy's left pad and the post to give the hosts a 1-0 victory.
Just five power-plays were featured in the game, with each team getting two shots on goal during their man-advantage situations, and Wayzata held a slip 21-19 advantage in shots on goal.
The Red Knights appeared to have the best chance of the night when they got a power-play chance with 3:13 to play but Wayzata didn't allow a shot on goal during the two minutes and, essentially, sent the game to overtime.
The winning goal came when Miller won a faceoff to the left of the BSM goal. In a scramble, John Mattson tipped the puck loose for Miller to pick and he failed on his first shot attempt but converted the second time.
The Red Knights now take a 2-2-0 record into Friday's game with Moorhead. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on the St. Louis Park Rec Center's west rink.
Mason McElroy turned aside 20 of 21 shots versus Wayzata.
Adam Marshall had a game-high six shots on goal
