Marshall's overtime power-play goal proves decisive.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Sam Ranallo scored back-to-back goals in the third period, including a game-tying goal on a penalty shot with two minutes, 27 seconds remaining in the third period, but Adam Marshall scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal with 1:46 remaining in overtime to give 15th-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s a 5-4 win over Rogers in the opening game of the Tradition at the Park tournament at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

The Royals struck first, just before the seven-minute mark of the opening period but the lead would last less than two minutes before Drew Stewart tucked the puck inside the left post to tie the score.

He added a second goal 1:55 into the second period as he worked a 2-on-1 give-and-go with Michael Risteau before scoring from the top of the crease.

Rogers responded with a power-play goal three minutes later to tie the score but, just 36 seconds after the Royals tied the game, Tristan Sarsland picked up the puck along the right-wing boards in his own zone and threaded a pass between a pair of Rogers players, finding Peter Giertsen in the neutral zone.

From there, Giertsen broke in alone, used a deke to get goalie Cade Chapman down on his pads and tucked a forehand shot behind the netminder.

The Red Knights took a two-goal lead, 3:21 into the third period, as Marshall took a pass from Brendan McMorrow as he entered the Royals' zone on the left side.

He skated into the left faceoff circle and snapped off a shot that beat Chapman on the near side.

Drew Stewart scored BSM's first two goals versus Rogerts.

Rogers would not give up, however, as Ranallo cut the lead in half with 7:21 to play and then, with 2:27 remaining in the third period and Chapman pulled for an extra attacked, Ranallo was hauled down on a breakaway and given a penalty shot, which he converted to tie the score.

The Royals were whistled for three penalties in overtime and, after killing off the first, just 41 seconds into the extra session, a holding penalty on Dawson Jenson, coupled with a bench minor penalty, gave BSM a 5-on-3 power play.

They needed almost the entire two minutes before Marshall ended the game with 1:46 to play by ripping a shot from the right circle into the back of the net.

The Red Knights had a 56-36 advantage in shots on goal, using a 23-8 advantage in the second period to take their first lead of the game, and then out shot the Royals, 13-2, in overtime, with 12 shots coming on the power play.

Mason McElroy turned aside 32 shots to earn his third consecutive win. His shutout streak came to an end at 123:00.

BSM plays the late game each of the next two nights, facing sixth-ranked Maple Grove at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, before rounding out the tournament with a 7:30 p.m. game, Thursday, with 17th-ranked Stillwater.
