Wendt tallies three assists in win over Maple Grove

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's made use of its power play in the third period, scoring the trying and go-ahead goals in the game with the man advantage, and the Red Knights went onto a 4-2 junior varsity win over Maple Grove.

After the Crimson grabbed an early lead, Maceo Phillips scored his first goal of the season with 5:32 remaining in the opening period, only to have Maple Grove respond with a short-handed tally just over two minutes to head into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.

Maple Grove out-shot BSM, 12-7, in the second period. Five of those 12 shots came during a five-minute major power play but Brennan Chapman stopped everything the Crimson threw at him and the teams entered the second intermission with no change in the score.

The Red Knights got a pair of power-play chances in the final period and converted on both of them.

The first came at 4:51 of the third period and, 42 seconds into the advantage, Max Wendt recorded his second assist of the game as he set up Mikey Lindberg's first goal of the game, which tied the score at 2-2.

The game continued at 2-2 into the final minutes of the game, with BSM killing off a two-minute power play, before getting a final opportunity with 3:45 to play and, with 12 seconds remaining in the power-play, Wendt registered his third assist of the game by setting up Ryan Baird for the eventual game winner.

Mikey Lindberg's power-play goal tied the score at 2-2 and kicked off a three-goal third period for the Red Knights.

It would take just 32 seconds for BSM to put an exclamation mark on the victory as Liam Kyle scored into an empty net to secure the 4-2 win.

Chapman, who stopped a 22 shots he faced over the game's final 30 minutes, made 28 saves in the game as the Red Knights were out-shot, 30-24.

BSM wraps up tournament play in the Tradition in the Park event when it takes on Stillwater in a game slated for a 4 p.m. start.
