Baird's two short-handed, empty-net goals seal victory for Red Knights.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Ryan Baird set up Max Wendt's eventual game-winning goal in the second period and then scored two empty-net, short-handed goals in the game's final two minutes to secure Benilde-St. Margaret's 4-1 junior varsity win over Stillwater.

The Ponies had a 14-7 advantage in shots on goal and jumped on top first at the game's five minutes, 23 second mark.

Mitchell West made sure the Red Knights wouldn't trail entering the first intermission as he scored with 6:54 to play in the opening stanza.

The Red Knights then controlled the second period, holding a 13-5 shots on goal advantage, and Wendt's goal, 3:24 into the frame, was the only goal scored and would prove to be the game-winner.

The final period was evenly matched, turning into a goaltending duel and Charlie Winegarner's 12 saves kept Stillwater from evening the score.

BSM was then whistled for two penalties in the game's final 2:14 and the Ponies were poised to finally get the equalizer when they pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and a 6-on-4 advantage.

However, with 1:35 to play, its was Baird who scored into an empty net for a 3-1 Red Knight lead.

Another BSM penalty, with one minute to play, coupled with Stillwater pulling it's goalie once again, gave the Ponies a 6-on-3 advantage.

Charlie Winegarner won his third game of the season by stopping 30 of 31 shots.

Once again, though, it was Baird who came through, finding the empty-net again to cap off the 4-1 victory.

The Red Knights finished the game with a 34-31 edge in shots on goal, backstopped by a stellar effort by Charlie Winegarner, who turned aside 30 shots for his third win of the season.

BSM now has an eight-day layoff before returning to action next Saturday, Jan. 8, with a 6 p.m. game at Edina.
