BSM claims key victory against Section 6AA rival.

EDINA, Minn. -- Michael Risteau scored a pair of second-period goals to give eighth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's some breathing room and Mason McElroy stopped 32 of 34 shots as the Red Knights upset second-ranked Edina, 5-2, at Braemar Arena.

Risteau's first goal, at six minutes, 31 seconds of the second period, came less than 90 seconds after the Hornets had cut the lead in half with a power-play goal.

Drew Stewart's pass from the left corner found Risteau entering the zone as the trailing forward on a rush and his shot from the high slot bulged the twice to restore the two-goal lead.

Stewart, who had a goal and two assists on the night, also set up Risteau's second goal less than five minutes, leaving a drop-pass for Risteau inside the Edina blue line.

From there, the Red Knight sophomore followed Stewart and shot behind him, catching Hornet goalie Robbie Clarkowski unable to react in time.

BSM had taken a two-goal lead in the first period, getting on the scoreboard on the first of the Red Knights' three power-play goals when Tristan Sarsland's blast from the blue line found the back of the net 7:35 into the contest.

Their second goal came with 52.8 seconds remaining in the opening frame when Adam Marshall carried the puck into the Edina zone on the left side and his pass across the slot found Stewart without a Hornet back-checking him.

Brady Yakesh recorded a career-high three assists in the victory over Edina.

Stewart then made a deke with his forehand to get Clarkowski down on the ice and he then stepped around the Hornet netminder and flicked in backhand shot.

Edina had a last gasp when Ryan Flaherty scored with 3:56 to play and gave the Hornets an opportunity to pull Clarkowski for an extra-attacked.

The move failed to pay off and, with 49 seconds to play, Marshall scored into an empty net to seal the victory.

While the Red Knight offense was clicking on its chances, Mason McElroy was busy in his net, turning aside 32 of the 34 shots he faced to earn his sixth consecutive victory.

Tuesday will see BSM open Metro West Conference play when the Red Knights travel to the Chaska Community Center to face 16th-ranked Chaska with the opening faceoff slated for 7 p.m.
