BSM opens Metro West Conference play with win over Hawks

CHASKA, Minn. -- Ben Norris scored with three minutes, 38 seconds to play in overtime at eighth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's opened Metro West Conference play with a 3-2 victory at 16th-ranked Chaska.

Norris' goal came from hard work as he chased a loose puck into the Hawks' zone.

Goalie Carter Wishart attempted to clear the puck but Norris gave him no room and the clearing attempt deflected off the Red Knight sophomore and into the Chaska net to extend BSM's winning streak to seven games.

The early-going of the game went the Hawks' way and they took an early lead with Gavin Nahan putting the home team on top just three minutes, 13 seconds into the game.

That goal would be answered by an unlikely hero as Gino Gatti stole the puck along the right-wing boards at the Chaska blue line before skating in on Wishart and scoring his first goal of the season.

It was the Red Knights' second power-play unit which gave it its first lead during the second period, in which the visitors held a 17-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Brendan McMorrow, who recorded a game-high eight shots on goal, threaded a pass through the slot to Michael Risteau in the right circle and the second-year BSM sophomore struck for his eighth goal of the season.

Gino Gatti's first goal of the season enabled BSM to tie the score at 1-1.

That lead lasted nearly 17 minutes before Chaska tied the score at 2-2 with Matthew Magnuson scored with 6:51 remaining in the third period.

BSM then controlled much of the overtime, using a strong forecheck to keep the Hawks bottled up in their own zone and, ultimately, leading to Norris' game-winning goal.

The Red Knights held a 37-28 advantage in shots for the game with Mason McElroy winning his seventh consecutive start by making 26 saves.

With the win, the Red Knights will take a 9-4-0 record into next Tuesday's game with ninth-ranked St. Thomas Academy. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.
