BSM shocks St. Thomas with running-time victory.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. – Adam Marshall scored the game’s first three goals and fourth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret’s shocked 13th-ranked St. Thomas Academy with a 7-1 rout of the Cadets.

After a 2-4-0 start to the season, including a three-game losing streak, the Red Knights have now rattled off eight consecutive victories, including five versus top 20-ranked opponents.

It was BSM’s top line that led the way against St. Thomas, with Marshall, Mitchell Dokman and Brendan McMorrow combining for four goals and 10 points.

Marshall had his hat trick completed 25 minutes into the game, scoring at three minutes, four seconds of the opening period and then collecting his next two goals two and a half minutes apart before the midway point of the second period.

Sporting a 4-0 lead over the Cadets, an opponent to which they had lost to five consecutive times and had not recorded a win against since Jan. 5, 2016, the Red Knights took a 4-0 into the final period when Gavin Reed’s shot from the top of the left circle popped the water bottle on top of the net and put an end to St. Thomas goalie Tyler Magozzi’s night.

Backup goalie Matt Schoephoerster didn’t fare any better, allowing a short-handed goal to Brady Yakesh just 28 seconds into the final period, carrying the puck into the Cadets’ zone and scoring from 20 feet out in the right circle.

Mitchell Dokman recorded a career-high four points with a goal and three assists.

The game would go into running time when Dokman took a pass in the slot from Marshall and quickly shot the puck past Schoephoerster before he could slide across the goal mouth to prevent the goal.

St. Thomas finally got on the scoreboard with 4:14 to play in the game when Luke Candon scored on the power-play but that lead last just 17 seconds before Ben Norris intercepted a pass behind the St. Thomas goalie and found Ryan Gearen with a backhand pass in the slot and he sent the game back into running time by finding the back of the net.

Somewhat lost in the scoring onslaught was the fact that St. Thomas outshot BSM, 26-23. The efforts of Mason McElroy, who won his eighth consecutive game, resulted in a 25-save performance.

The Red Knights return to Metro West Conference play, Saturday, when they host rival St. Louis at the St. Louis Park Rec Center. Opening faceoff is slated for 7 p.m.
