Red Knights miss shutout by one minute in 5-1 victory.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- After having its home opener postponed by four days, the Benilde-St. Margaret's junior varsity began its 2022-23 campaign with a 5-1 win over Edina.

Nik Wahlstrom scored the first of five consecutive Red Knight goals when Cam Kirschner won an offensive-zone faceoff in the left circle and pushed his way forward to retrieve the puck at the goal line.

Kirschner then backhanded a pass into the slot, where Wahlstrom was waiting all alone to deposit BSM's first goal of the season, seven minutes, 52 seconds into the contest.

Just over six minutes later, Kirschner helped set up BSM's second goal when he made a pass out into that Dylan Popehn put on net and Jack Anderson crashed the slot to bury the rebound.

A pair of penalties late in the first period had the teams skating 4-on-4 to open the third period and just seven seconds after the Hornet's penalty ended to put them on the power play, Junior Podein and Carter Callan quickly worked the puck to Popehn, whose short-handed goal gave the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Podein would go end-to-end for a highlight-reel goal midway through the period and Popehn then scored his second goal of the game with 55 seconds to play in the middle stanza to send the game into the third period with the home team holding a 5-0 lead.

Charlie Winegarner, who made 13 saves through two periods, made 11 in the third period and was one minute from recording a shutout before Edina scored on the power play to finish the scoring.

Next up for the Red Knights is Tuesday's road game at Andover, with game time slated for 5 p.m.

Charlie Winegarner opened the season by turning in a 24-save effort.
