Comeback bid falls short for Red Knights in season opener
Late goals and momentum not enough for BSM to overcome Edina.
ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- After falling behind, 3-0, Benilde-St. Margaret's controlled much of the game's second half but could only manage a pair of goals in dropping a season-opening, 3-2 decision to Edina.
Two goals less than 90 seconds apart in the first period, the second of which came on the power play, gave the Hornets an early 2-0.
When John Halverson converted a turnover into an unassisted goal at 6:46 of the second period, the visitors held a 3-0 lead.
With 2:42 to play in the middle frame, Ben Norris got the Red Knights on the scoreboard when he carried the puck into the Edina zone. He immediately moved the puck to Caleb Koskie who got the puck to Poul Andersen.
Andersen's initial shot was stopped but, as the puck rebounded in the air, he and Norris both had chances at the puck but it was the latter who banged home the rebound to help turn the momentum in the favor of BSM.
The final period saw the Red Knights hold the Hornets to just four shots on goal and, just 5:04 into the stanza, it was Andersen completing a rush up ice and scoring on a shot from the right circle to make it a one-goal game.
From there, Robbie Clarkowski and Edina help the hosts at bay to snap a three-game losing streak.
Next up for the Red Knights is a meeting with third-ranked and defending Class AA state champion Andover. Game time at the Huskies' home is set for 7 p.m.
Ben Norris scored BSM's first goal and set up Poul Anderson for the team's second goal.
