Red Knights clinched Metro West JV title with win over Storm

Palmer's four points paces BSM to win at Chanhassen.

VICTORIA, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's wrapped up the Metro West Conference junior varsity title with a 5-2 win at Chanhassen.

Dylan Popehn kicked off the scoring at the six minute, 50-second mark of the opening period as a he poke-checked the puck off the stick of Storm defensemen, attempting to break the puck out, and he quickly turned the turnover in the Chanhassen slot into his 22nd goal of the season.

Less than three minutes later, the Storm tied the game but, just 26 seconds after they tied the score, Nick Palmer restored the Red Knights' one-goal lead as he buried a Popehn rebound to send his team into the first intermission with a lead.

Once again, the Storm tied the scored, 1:22 into the middle frame with another transition goal as Liam Moser exited his defensive zone with the puck and moved it to Popehn, who skated into the zone and had his shot stopped.

Moser followed up the play and quickly banged home the rebound to give BSM the lead for good.

Louis Piper sent the game into the final period with the Red Knights leading, 4-2, as he took a pass from Charlie Thorpe on the right side of the neutral zone. He then used his speed to get around a Storm defensemen and broke in on the goal, snapping a shot inside the post for his second goal of the season.


Dylan Popehn scored the game's first goal and helped set up BSM's second and third goals.

Nik Wahlstrom added an insurance goal in the third period when Taylor Salmon's shot was kicked out the the right faceoff circle. Wahlstrom wasted no time in firing the rebound back on goal from the bottom of the right circle and collected his 15th goal of the season.

BSM had a 42-26 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Charlie Winegarner recorded 24 saves to pick up his 12th win of the season.

Next up for the Red Knights is their season finale, Friday, when they take on New Prague in a 5:15 p.m. game at the New Prague Community Center.
