Red Knights' season comes to close with loss to Hornets
Giertsen ends career with two-goal game.
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Eleventh-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's scored first, had a shots on goal advantage and yet, in the end, saw its season come to a close with a 5-2 loss in the Section 6AA semifinals to second-ranked Edina.
When Peter Giertsen knocked home a Michael Risteau-rebound, the Red Knights had an early lead, five minutes, 17 seconds into the game.
The Hornets would not stay down long, however, as Robbie Cowan scored from the top of the crease on his team's first power-play opportunity of the game to tie the score.
Edina then took a lead it would not relinquish when John Warpinski scored his first goal of the season with six minutes remaining in the opening frame.
The score remained 2-1 for over 28 minutes before Charlie Sandven stole a puck near the right wall, walked to the middle of the ice and blasted a shot past Mason McElroy with 11:57 to play in the final stanza.
Jackson Nevers scored five minutes later to go up 4-1 but Giertsen scored his second goal of the game with 4:08 to play when we won a faceoff in the left circle, pushed the puck through the legs of the Edina center and went to the net for his ninth goal of the season.
The Hornets put the game away with 1:33 to play while on a major power play. Mason West took a cross-ice pass at his own blue line before skating up the boards and dumping the puck into an empty net.
Peter Giertsen ended his career with the first two-goal game of his career.
After being out-shot, 10-8, in the opening period, the Red Knights had a 13-4 advantage in the second period and held a 12-11 edge in the final period for a 33-25 advantage on the night.
However, the Hornets converted two of six power-play chances while BSM had just one man advantage opportunity.
The loss ended the careers of six seniors, Giertsen and fellow co-captain Ryan Baird, Wes Berg, Maximos Wendt, Brennan Chapman and Charlie Conway.
The Red Knights end the season with a 19-8-0 record after sharing the Metro West Conference title, their seventh crown in nine seasons with the MWC.
