Johnson's hat trick leads BSM JV past Waconia

Natural hat trick comes in 162-second span to send Red Knights onto victory.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Jack Johnson snapped a 1-1 first-period tie with a natural hat trick and Bergen Kopischke assisted on Benilde-St. Margarets' first four goals as the Red Knight junior varsity posted a 9-2 win over Waconia.

In a wild opening 17 minutes, in which the teams combined for seven goals, Aaron Hatlestad got the scoring going seven minutes, 27 seconds into the game.

The Wildcats tied the game 27 seconds later before Johnson's natural hat, which came in a span of 2:42, gave the hosts a 4-1 lead.

The teams would trade goals in the final three minutes of the opening period as Waconia cut the lead to 4-2 before Max Schumacher sent the Red Knights into the locker room leading by three goals.

The first of two Mark Walsma goals, 2:52 into the second period, was the only goal of the middle frame with a three-goal third period capping things for the hosts.

Kopischke tied for the team lead with his seventh goal of the season at 5:38 of the final stanza and Walsma scored his second goal just 19 seconds later.

The game's lone power-play came with 5:51 to play and saw David Langevin convert the opportunity for the Red Knights with 3:21 remaining in the contest.

Johnny Raymond contributed three assists to the win while Hatlestad, who won 18 of 22 faceoffs, had a goal and two assists.

BSM had a 48-14 advantage in shots on goal with Johnson, Kopischke and Walsma each record seven.

Jacob Dietel picked up his fifth win of the season to remain perfect in five starts by stopping 12 shots, including all seven Wildcat shots in the game's final 34 minutes.

Up next for the Red Knights is Thursday's non-conference game versus Eden Prairie, which gets underway at 5 p.m. at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

 


Bergen Kopischke assisted on BSM's first four goals and leads the team with 18 points in 11 games.
