Video Highlights

Bryan Glynn scored a pair of goals and Mike Shibrowski stopped 20 of 21 shots as Benilde-St. Margaret's posted a 4-1 win over Rochester Century.

The Red Knights took a 2-0 lead in the first period as Glynn scored just one minute, 50 seconds into the contest. Jake Horton scored his first varsity goal with 1:37 to play in the opening frame after intercepting a Panther clearing attempt at the blue line before stepping to the top of the circle, where he slapshot found the upper right corner.

"Jake Horton gets better with each game.," BSM head coach Ken Pauly said of his freshman defenseman. "He has great poise for a 15-year old. He is fast turning into one of our most dependable players."

Just 19 seconds into the second period, another freshman, Christian Horn, scored on a rebound of a Pat Borer shot to put the hosts ahead 3-0, but the momentum begin to swing the other way shortly thereafter.

Cory Birkestrand picked up a loose puck in the neutral for the visitors and got it deep into the BSM zone, where Joe Faupel picked up the loose puck. He got the puck to Tyler Anderson in the bottom of the left circle and his shot beat Shibrowski over his right shoulder with 5:43 to play in the period.

The Panthers had several scoring chances before the end of the middle frame but Shibrowski stopped each won, including a flurry where he made three saves before covering the puck.

"Century’s second-period goal really gave them life" Pauly said. "Our team took a step backward during that time. I was disappointed with how we responded to their goal. We were fortunate to take our two goal lead into the third."

Holding onto that lead was essential as the Panthers outshot their hosts, 9-7, in the final period. However, the Red Knights sealed the win with a power-play goal with 4:49 to play in the game as Brett Patterson's pass in front of the net hit Bryan Glynn in the leg and deflected into the net.

"Converting on the power play in the third gave us the breathing room that we had been looking for throughout the last part of the game," Pauly said. "Michael Shibrowski had some nice saves to preserve our win.

"Rochester Century is a very well-coached team," Red Knight head coach Ken Pauly said. "It was a very nice win for us going into the Schwan Cup."

BSM returns to action Monday, Dec. 29, when it takes part in the Schwan Cup, taking on Burnsville at Aldrich Arena. Opening faceoff is slated for 3 p.m.
