O'Toole hat trick helps clinch final win

Sean O'Toole scored three goals in the second period of a 6-4 Benilde-St. Margaret's win over Cretin-Derham Hall as the Red Knights claimed the consolation title in the Silver Division of the Schwan Cup at Highland Arena in St. Paul.

O'Toole had four goals and six points in the tournament to lead BSM. His three goals against the Raiders allowed the Red Knights to take a 5-2 lead through two periods and Jeff Spellmire's second goal of the game, an empty netter, clinched the win.

BSM opened the tournament Monday with a 4-1 loss to Burnsville. Evan Petersen's first goal of the season gave the Red Knights an early 1-0 lead but the Blaze scored four unanswered goals, including an empty-net goal with 21 seconds remaining in the game.

Tuesday's second-round game saw BSM explode for eight goals in a shutout win over Breck. Adam Clark made 15 saves to record his second shutout of the season. Evan Miller and Chris Flood both scored twice in the win.

The win over Cretin-Derham Hall featured four-point efforts by Michael Blessing, who had four assists, and John Kernan, who had a goal and three assists.

The Red Knights return to action Saturday, Jan. 1, when they take on conference foe Irondale at 12:30 p.m. at the SLP Rec Center.
