BSM goalie named athlete of the week

Benilde-St. Margaret's senior goalie Rob Ankeny has been named an athlete of the week by both the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press for his work in two Red Knight wins last week.

Thrust into the starting role when Jacob Meyers broke his finger in practice last Monday, Ankeny stepped in to face defending state champion Hill-Murray and turned aside a career-high 37 shots as BSM came from behind for a 3-2 overtime win.

“I really don’t think you can say enough about the effort that Robby Ankeny gave this team," head coach Ken Pauly said after the win. "He was very calm and in control the entire night.

"I said at the beginning of the year that we had three goalies who could start for most teams in the state. Ankeny’s performance is proof of that.”

The Red Knights returned to North Suburban Conference action Thursday, after two weeks of non-conference games, to face league-leading Totino-Grace. In that game, Ankeny notched his fifth career shutout by stopping 17 shots in a 5-0 win. He also picked up his second career assist in the win.

On the week, Ankeny stopped 54 of 56 shots and is now 4-0-0 on the season with a 1.19 goals against average and a .940 save percentage.
