Quick start, tight defense add up to win

Dan Kuenzi scored 84 seconds into the game, Benilde-St. Margaret's tallied 17 shots in the game's first 15 minutes and the Red Knights held off St. Louis Park, 3-0.

BSM outshot the Orioles, 45-9, and controlled the play but were hard-pressed to beat SLP netminder Jordan Nelson, who finished with 43 saves.

Kuenzi's goal came when he took a pass from Evan Miller deep in the right faceoff circle. His shallow-angle shot beat Nelson over the glove to put the Red Knights on the scoreboard.

BSM's second goal came on a short-handed breakaway by Alex Brask, who returned to the lineup after a shoulder injury in last Thursday's loss to Shattuck-St. Mary's.

The Red Knights racked up 18 shots in the second period but could manage just a single tally as John Kernan recorded his team-leading 19th goal of the season.

Despite facing just nine shots, BSM goalie Luke McCormick was called upon to make several key saves en route to his second shutout of the season.

The Red Knights are in action again Saturday, Feb. 7, when they will be at Chisago Lakes for a 12 p.m. game with the Wildcats.
