Four-time defending North Suburban Conference champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s has announced is schedule for the 2009-10 season.

The schedule features 12 games against conference foes, two of which will be four-point games, and 13 non-conference games. Included in those non-conference games are meetings with five of last season’s eight Class AA state tournament participants.

Also on the schedule is a three-game holiday tournament, Dec. 28-30, at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center. That tournament will feature the Red Knights, Bloomington Jefferson, Centennial, Elk River, Maple Grove, Moorhead, Wayzata and Woodbury.

“We are very excited about the 2009-10 schedule,” BSM head coach Ken Pauly said. “The non-conference schedule is among the best in the state.

“We are especially excited to participate in a new holiday tournament at the St. Louis Park Rec Center. I can’t think of another tournament that will feature a stronger field of teams.”

The Red Knights will have 10 non-conference games plus that holiday tournament. The season opens, as it has the past three seasons, with a meeting with St. Cloud Tech. The teams are slated to meet at the National Hockey Center, Dec. 1.

The second game on the schedule also remains the same as BSM faces Stillwater, with the Red Knights hosting the Ponies, Dec. 4.

Game three of the schedule sees BSM taking on the first of five 2009 state tournament participants when it meets Hill-Murray, Dec. 8, at Aldrich Arena.

The conference schedule opens with a Saturday matinee against Irondale, Dec. 12. The Red Knights will play a second NSC game before the holidays five days later when they host Chisago Lakes.

In between those two games, BSM also hosts Cretin-Derham Hall, a state tournament semifinalist last season, Dec. 15.

A matchup with the third of five state tournament participants, Rochester Century, comes Dec. 22, when the teams will meet at the Rochester Recreation Center.

The other meetings with state tournament participants see BSM meeting Edina at Braemar Arena, Jan. 12, and a first-time meeting with state runner-up Moorhead, Jan. 29, at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Also on the schedule for the third consecutive season is national power Shattuck-St. Mary’s, which is on schedule for a Feb. 4 meeting. Last season, the Sabres posted 37 wins and reached the U18 Tier I national quarterfinals.

As for the conference, portion of the schedule, Pauly admits his team will be pressed to win a fifth consecutive title.

“We look for Spring Lake Park and St. Louis Park to have much improved teams,” he said. “Totino-Grace, as always, will be tough so winning our fifth straight North Suburban Conference title will be a challenge.

“The greatest challenge on the schedule will be travelling to Shattuck, but our team always looks forward to playing Tom Ward’s club.”
