BSM winger earns spot with USA U-17 team

Following an outstanding showing at USA Hockey's Boys' Select 16 Player Development Camp, June 26-July 2, Benilde-St. Margaret's right wing Christian Horn has been selected for the 2009 U.S. Under-17 Select Team that will compete at the 2009 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament, Aug. 18-22, in Fussen, Germany.

Horn was second at the Select 16 camp in goals (6) and points (8). He scored two power-play and two short-handed goals in six games.

"It was really fun," Horn said of the experience at the development camp. "I played with some kids I haven't played with before and it's always interesting to do that."

During the 2008-09 campaign, Horn became the first freshman in school history to lead the Red Knights in goals. He tied for the team lead in game-winning goals (4), which included a pair of overtime goals. He earned All-North Suburban Conference honors for his efforts.

"I feel honored," Horn said of his selection to the USA Select 17 Team. "I'm going to be playing against some great competition and it will be my type of hockey with more open ice and flow to the game.

"It'll be really cool to wear the USA jersey and represent my country."

"He's going to have to get used to the spot light," BSM head coach Ken Pauly said. "This is a great honor for him and it won't be the last time.

"Christian continues to get better and better. He scored big goals against good teams last year and he's a great kid with a good attitude. We're really proud of him.

"At this age, he's the best pure goal scorer I've seen at this school. Great forwards aren't a dime a dozen and ones who can score goals are a commodity."

Horn will be one of five Minnesotans on the team, three of whom he and the Red Knights faced off against this past season.

Defenseman Dan Molenaar of Class AA state-champion Eden Prairie was selected after tying Horn for their team scoring lead at the development camp. Hill-Murray teammates Ben Bahe and Kevin Becker will join Horn among the Select's 12 forwards as will Anthony Greco, who played for the Shattuck-St. Mary's U16 Midget team last season.

The USA Select 17 Team will open the Five Nations Tournament by facing Slovakia, Aug. 18, at 9 a.m. CDT. After a day off, the USA will take on Switzerland, Aug. 20, at 12:30 p.m., followed by an Aug. 21, meeting with the Czech Repbulic, at 8 a.m., and the tourney finale, Aug. 22, versus Germany at 10:30 a.m.
