Former Red Knight standout Matt Bergland ('08), a sophomore at Providence College, was named Hockey East Player of the Week on Monday, October 26.
Bergland led the Friars to a pair of wins over at Bowling Green last week to earn his first Hockey East weekly honor.
He scored first career hat trick and added an assist in PC's 8-2 victory over the Falcons, October 23. The three goals marked the first time a PC player recorded a hat trick since Oct. 11, 2003.
The following night, the sophomore assisted on the game-winning goal as the Friars defeated the Falcons, 3-1, giving them their fourth win in five games, marking the team's best start since the 2003-04 season.
PC's scoring lead with 27 points as a freshman last season, Bergland is leading the team in goals (4) and points (6) through its first five games.
As a Red Knight, Bergland led BSM to a third-place finish at the 2008 Minnesota State High School League class AA championship. His 38 goals and 69 points that season both rank second on the school's all-time list and he earned all-state and all-state tournament honors.
