Ryan strikes twice in win over Royals

HOPKINS, Minn. -- Hopkins got on the scoreboard first, just 71 seconds into the game, but Benilde-St. Margaret's took the lead just over three minutes later and cruised to a 6-2 junior varsity win.

After the Royals took the early lead, Cooper Gay tied the score just two minutes later and, at the four-minute, 28 second mark, Sam Ryan gave the Red Knights a lead it would never relinquish.

Despite dominating the opening frame, holding an 18-2 advantage in shots on goal, BSM could not extend the lead until the second period, when Ryan struck again, this time on the power play, for a 3-1 lead, 67 seconds into the middle stanza.

Hopkins closed to within a goal when it got a goal from Noah Junke at 4:12 but, just 16 seconds later, Toby Curtiss restored the two-goal marging for BSM and Jonny Woodford added a goal with 4:51 to play in the period to send the game into the second intermission with a 5-2 lead.

Royals goalie Ethan Myers held the Red Knights at bay through most of the third period as the guests held a 24-1 shots on goal advantage.

The Red Knights got their sixth and final goal with just 90 seconds to play when Dylan McNulty scored his first goal of the season and BSM's eighth power-play chance of the game.

Ten of the Red Knights' 14 skaters recorded points and 13 of the 14 recorded shots on goal as BSM held a 51-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The Red Knights are off until next Saturday when they host Rochester Lourdes in a 12:30 p.m. game at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center.
