ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- A pair of short-handed goals in the game's final 18 minutes capped a comeback by Benilde-St. Margaret's as the 17th-ranked Red Knights opened the 2018-19 campaign with a 5-4 win over Hopkins.

The second of those short-handed goals came with five minutes, 12 seconds remaining in the game and just 71 seconds after Henry Sweeney's second power-play goal of the game had tied the score.

James Callahan had a career-best three-point night.

Nate Schweitzer helped set up the game's first goal and tied the game at 3-3 with his first goal of the season.

Charlie Bischel turned into the star of the game after Ian Bahr picked off a pass at the Royals' blue line. He left a touch pass for Bischel, who skated in on Hopkins goalie Zach Hayes and deked around the netminder for his first career short-handed and game-winning goal.

The Red Knights had completed a comeback from a 3-1 deficit with 57 seconds remaining in the second period when Blake Mesenburg sent Jonah Mortenson on a short-handed breakway.

BSM took the game's opening lead with Mesenburg's pass across the slot found James Callahan, who would add a pair of assists, in the right circle and he beat Hayes inside the near post.

With the game apparently headed into the first intermission with the hosts holding a one-goal, Tom Gazich finished a short-handed rush with 0.5 seconds remaining to give Hopkins momentum heading into the first intermission.

The Royals turned that momentum into a Jack Stuessi goal just 39 seconds into the second period and Sweeney's first power-play goal came at 5:30.

BSM began its comeback when Blake Mesenburg scored his first goal as a Red Knight 1:43 later and Nate Schweitzer tied the game with 7:07 to play in the middle frame on a shot from the left point.

BSM dominated the game with a 53-26 advantage in shots on goal but were almost undone by penalties, as both Hopkins power-play goals were 5-on-3 tallies.

Hayes finished the game with 48 saves for the Royals while Carson Limesand turned in a 22-save effort the the Red Knights.

Next up for BSM is a Thursday meeting with second-ranked Edina. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Braemar Arena.
