Final seven minutes prove difference for BSM.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Ian Bahr snapped a 3-3 tie with six minutes, 12 seconds, to play and Blake Mesenburg added an empty-net goal as 18th-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's used the late goals to hand Grand Rapids a 5-3 defeat.

The game started well for the Red Knights as they struck first, 7:10 into the game.

A hit by Jett Johnson to the left of the Thunderhawks' goal created a turnover and Charlie Warnert pick up the loose puck in the middle of the slot, spinning 360 degrees and snapping off a shot which beat Grand Rapids goalie Carter Clafton over his blocker.

The Thunderhawks responded by scoring  two goals just 23 seconds apart, both on odd-man rushes, to take a 2-1 lead with 3:03 to play in the opening period.

The game's lone power-play goal came 4:49 into the second period as Mesenburg took a pass on the right side of the Thunderhawks' zone from Adam Marshall, skated into the right faceoff circle and beat Clafton with a wrist shot past his glove.

BSM regained the lead when Mesenburg collected his own rebound and found Nate Schweitzer at the right point. The Red Knights' co-captain then unleashed a slap shot which hit traffic in front before finding the back of the net.

Grand Rapids evened the 2:27 into the third period when a Red Knight turnover led to Hunter Bischoff finding Brandon Goehring on the left side of the BSM goal, from where he beat Olson inside the near post.

Charlie Frattalone made 15 saves and earned a win in his varsity debut.

Blake Mesenburg scored twice and added an assist to give him a team-best seven points on the season.

The eventual game-winning goal came when the Thunderhawks were unable to cleanly handle the puck and Bahr managed to glove the puck down to the ice before before beating Clafton on the ice.

Mesenburg then finished the scoring when Grand Rapids was unable to hold the puck on the right side of the Red Knight zone. He then skated up the boards before depositing the puck into an empty net.

It was the second three-point outing in Mesenburg's first three games for Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Meanwhile, Charlie Frattalone, who made his BSM varsity debut, turned aside 15 shots, including nine of the final 10 he faced to earn the victory.

Next up for the Red Knights is the North-South Classic, in which they will travel to Brainerd to face the Warriors, Friday, in an 8 p.m. game, followed Saturday by a 2:30 p.m. game versus Hermantown.
