Red Knights get mixed results in Brainerd

BRAINERD, Minn. -- The Benilde-St. Margaret's junior varsity came away from the North-South classic with a split of its two games, downing host Brainerd, 4-2, Friday, before falling Saturday to Hermantown, 8-2.

BSM 4, Brainerd 2

Will Thompson's third-period power-play goal proved to be the game winner.

Charlie Frattlone stopped 12 of 14 shots and a power-play goal by Will Thompson with eight minutes, 38 seconds to play snapped a 2-2 tie.

The Red Nights took a 2-0 lead on a short-handed goal in the first period by Brady Giertsen, who then set up Ian Thorstenson just 1:36 into the second period.

The hosts fought back to tie the game at 2-2 entering the final period but Thompson's power-play goal gave the lead back to the visitors.

Logan Lyke, who set up Thompson's tally, then scored an empty-net goal by sending the puck the length of the ice to seal the win.

Hermantown 8, BSM 2

Brady Giertsen scored twice versus Hermantown and figured into the scoring of five of BSM's six goals on the weekend.

Three goals in the final 90 seconds of the opening period turned a one-goal game into four-goal Hermantown lead heading into the first intermission.

The Hawks' Cole Antcliff opened the scoring with the first of his four goals in the game, two minutes, 59 seconds into the contest, but Brady Giertsen responded less than three minutes late to tie the scored.

Hermantown then reeled off seven consecutive goals, including two goals just 12 seconds apart to close out the opening period.

BSM got one goal back when Giertsen scored his second of the game with just under 10 minutes to play but the Red Knights were unable to get any closer as they were outshot in the game by a 30-17 margin.

The Red Knights return to action, Tuesday, with a 5 p.m. game at St. Thomas before returning to the St. Louis Park Recreation Center, Friday, for their first home game in 13 days when they take on Moorhead at 5 p.m.
