Five third-period goals highlight BSM's victory at Chaska

CHASKA, Minn. -- Tenth-ranked Chaska scored just 12 seconds into the game.

It took 14th-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's more than 27 minutes to get on the scoreboard.

However, the Red Knights score four consecutive goals and tallied six times in the game's final 24 minutes en route to a 6-3 win.

When Ethan Benz broke in on BSM goalie Carson Limesand from the left side and snapped a shot short side to give the Hawks the opening lead, it appeared as if the visitors were back on their heels.

Seven of the game's first eight shots on goal were taken by the Hawks but BSM used its penalty kill to get its feet under them, as a Jonah Mortenson interference called at 6:13 of the opening period put the Red Knights a man down.

After successfully killing the penalty, BSM had four shots on goal and six shot attempts in the next two minutes and, from there, the game was on.

Will Thompson's first varsity goal proved to be the game winner.

Asher Connolly notched his first career goal in the win over Chaska.

Neither team could find the back of the net until Cooper Gay buried a Tristan Sarsland rebound with 6:28 to play in the second period.

In the next 2:18, the Red Knights would go up 3-1 on goals by Jett Johnson and Charlie Bischel, turning the momentum, decidedly, in the visitor's favor.

That lead became 4-1 2:28 into the final period when Will Thompson took a Nate Schweitzer pass on the left side and buried his shot to record his first varsity goal.

The goal proved crucial when Benz and Bill Bronson scored 38 seconds apart and, with 7:13 to play, the game was suddenly a one-goal affair.

It was another first career goal that gave BSM some breathing room when Schweitzer, who had four assists in the game, cleared the puck from the front of his own net to Bischel, who proceeded to set up Asher Connolly's first goal to gaive the Red Knights a 5-3 lead with 2:25 to play.

Chaska pulled goalie Justin Bach for an extra attacked 31 seconds later but were unable to create any pressure in the BSM zone.

While breaking the puck out of their own zone in the game's final minute, the puck came to Shane LaVelle, who was pressured by Jackson Bisson. A blind backhand pass found no Hawk player in the zone to take the pass and Johnson, the last BSM player to touch the puck, wound up in the scoring column for the second time when the pass slid into the Hawks' empty net.

Chaska wasted a 32-22 advantage in shots on goal but Limesand, who stopped all 14 shots he faced in the second period as his team came from behind, finished with 29 saves.

Another Metro West Conference opponent awaits the Red Knights as they face Chanhassen, Thursday, at the Victoria Recreation Center beginning at 7 p.m.
