Jax Cafe hosts Benilde-St. Margaret's boys' hockey banquet

Red Knights convene to hand out season awards.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Benilde-St. Margaret's boys' hockey team celebrated its 2022-23 season with the team's annual year-end awards banquet at Jax Cafe.

Participation awards for the junior varsity team were awarded Gian Dante Aloi, Jack Anderson, Christian Beck, Wyatt Elder, Noah Johnson, Liam Kyle, Liam Moser, Logan Nowlin, Louis Piper, Westan Quirk, Taylor Salmon, Charlie Thorpe, Nik Wahlstrom, Charlie Winegarner, along with student managers Eric Anderson and Avery Coen.

Varsity letters were given to Poul Anderson, Ryan Baird, Wes Berg, Cole Bumgarner, Carter Callan, Brennan Chapman, Charlie Conway, Peter Giertsen, Cameron Kirschner, Caleb Koskie, Mason McElroy, Mason Minor, Ben Norris, Nick Palmer, Mace’o Phillips, Junior Podein, Dylan Popehn, Gavin Reed, Michael Risteau, Mason Stenger, Drew Stewart, A.J. Ulrich, Max Wendt, and student managers Claire Bodecker, Lucia Halstrom, Sam Ims, Emma Johnson, Marin King, Alexis May, Shea Traverse, Brook Wenande.


Ryan Baird

All-Metro West Conference

Baird cracked the varsity lineup on a full-time basis for the first time in 2022-23 and served as a co-captain, spending most of the season on the Red Knights' top line, where he averaged a point per game, tallying 11 goals and 15 points for 26 points while posting a plus/minus rating of +28.

He recorded back-to-back three-point games in the regular season finale at New Prague (Feb. 17) and again in BSM's Section 6AA quarterfinal win over Blake (Feb. 21).

Baird also recorded a pair of game-winning goals, in a 2-0 win at St. Louis Park (12/28) and an 8-2 win at Champlin Park (1/18).

All-Metro West Conference
100-Point Career Award

Berg joined the Red Knights for his senior season and had an immediate impact, registering 19 goals and 36 points while playing all 27 games during the 2022-23 campaign.

He led the team with a pair of hat tricks (Jan. 24 vs. Bloomington Jefferson; Feb. 17 vs. New Prague) and was second on the team with four game-winning goals and 110 shots on goal.

He put together an 11-game point-scoring streak (Dec. 28 - Jan. 31) in which he scored 11 goals and 21 points.

Brennan Chapman

Vic St. Martin Coaches Award

Chapman posted outstanding numbers in his second season as the Red Knights backup goalie as he started six games and came off the bench five other times.

His 5-0-0 record on the season gave him a 7-1-0 career record. He posted a 1.92 goals against average and a .905 save percentage.

Three of his five wins came via shutouts, in wins over St. Louis Park (12/28), Bloomington Jefferson (1/24) and Waconia (1/31).

Chapman also recorded his first career point when he picked up an assist in a win at Champlin Park (1/18).

Peter Giertsen

Hobey Baker Character Award

An assistant captain in 2021-22, Giertsen served as a team co-captain this season and responded by scoring a career high nine goals, including both Red Knight goals in their Section 6AA semifinal loss to Edina.

Giertsen also scored goals in back-to-back wins over Chaska (Jan. 10 and 14) during a stretch in which he scored four goals and nine points in seven games.

He was also one of the team's leaders in the faceoff circle, winning 57.1 percent of his draws.

Cam Kirschner

Most Improved Player Award

After scoring points in just two of his first 11 games, Kirschner finished the season by scoring seven points in his final five games, including a season-high four points and +5 plus/minus rating in a Section 6AA quarterfinal win over Blake (Feb. 21).

He finished his rookie season with four goals and 17 points in 25 games and notched his first career game-winning goal in a win at Grand Rapids (Feb. 11).

Caleb Koskie

Best Defensive Forward Award

Koskie led all Red Knight forwards with 18 blocked shots and won 59.6 percent of his 342 faceoffs, including 54.2 percent of his 48 faceoffs in short-handed situations and 63.6 of his 44 even-strength defensive zone faceoffs.

In all, he was second on the team in assists (23), including five power-play assists, led the team in assists per 51 minutes (2.76) and tallied six goals and 29 points on the season.

Koskie had career highs in points (4) and assists (3) in BSM's regular-season finale win at New Prague (Feb. 17).

Mason McElroy

Honorable Mention All-Metro West Conference

The team's number one goalie for the past two seasons, McElroy went 5-1-0 with a 2.22 goals against average an .908 save percentage in conference games this season.

Overall, he went 13-9-0 with a 2.79 GAA and .893 save percentage while posting one shutout.

McElroy started 21 of 27 games this season and has started 43 of 55 games over the past two seasons and has a 30-14-0 record, 2.26 GAA and .909 save percentage with six career shutouts.

Ben Norris

Honorable Mention All-Metro West Conference

Norris notched nine goals and 25 points in 27 games in his second season as a Red Knight. He found his scoring touch in the second half of the season, with 20 of his points coming in the final 16 games of the season.

He tied his career high with three assists in the final game of the regular season, a victory at New Prague (Feb. 17).

In two varsity seasons, Norris has played all 55 of BSM's games and has 18 goals and 51 points during that time.

Gavin Reed

All-Metro West Conference

A three-year letter winner, Reed had career highs with 12 assists, 16 points, 58 shots on goal, a +25 plus/minus rating and 34 blocked shots.

He posted five multiple-point games, including in back-to-back wins at Blake (Dec. 20) and versus Hill-Murray (Dec. 22).

Reed also scored two goals and three points in the final three games of the season while recording a plus-seven plus/minus rating, including a plus-four in a win over Blake (Feb. 21).

Michael Risteau

Honorable Mention All-Metro West Conference

Risteau's third varsity season saw him post career highs in goals (17), assists (15), points (32), shots on goal (96) and power-play goals (6).

After missing back-to-back games during his freshman season, Risteau has now played 67 consecutive games.

He recorded his first career three-assist game in a win at Champlin Park (Jan. 18), which came in the midst of an eight-game point-scoring streak in which he recorded five goals and 14 points.

Mason Stenger

Best Defenseman Award
All-Metro West Conference

After moving to center last season, Stenger went back to his natural spot on the blue line and recorded 22 assists and 25 points, to go with 24 blocked shots.

He notched a career high three assists twice, in wins at Grand Rapids (Feb. 11) and Waconia (Jan. 31). He also had a career bests with seven shots on goal in a win at Moorhead (Jan. 7) and a plus-five rating in at win over Bloomington Jefferson (Jan. 24).

In two varsity seasons, Stenger has played all 55 of the Red Knights' games.

Drew Stewart

Jack Jablonski Most Determined Player Award

Leading Scoring Award
100-Point Career Award

With career highs in goals (24), assists (28), points (52), shots on goal (139), power-play goals (5), short-handed goals (3) and a team-leading five game-winning goals, Stewart established himself as one of the state's top forwards.

He recorded a career-best five points in a Section 6AA quarterfinal win over Blake (Feb. 21) and was a career-best plus-seven in a win over Waconia (Jan. 31).

2023-24 Captains

The captains for the 2023-24 season were named at the conclusion of the Red Knights' award banquet.

Serving a second season as a BSM captain will be Drew Stewart, after being one of the teams' three captains this past season.

Joining him with the "C" on their jersey will be fourth-year senior defenseman Gavin Reed, third-year senior center Caleb Koskie and third-year junior defenseman Mason Stenger.

The four will be task with leading a team scheduled to return 17 of 22 varsity letterwinners, coming off an 18-9-0 season in which they finished the regular season ranked 11th in the state.
