Red Knight JV scores late to tie Wayzata

BSM advances to consolation championship with shootout win.

Benilde-St. Margaret's scored two goals just 14 seconds apart late in the third period to garner a 2-2 tie with Wayzata and then proceed to advance to the consolation championship of the Sports Authority Holiday Hockey Classic with a 3-2 shootout victory.

The Red Knights had an advantage in shots on goal in all three periods as well as overtime but found themselves trailing, 2-0, heading into final four minutes of the third period.

Mark Kaske started a rush in his own end by getting the puck to Matt Arnason, who moved it to Zach Risteau, who crossed the blueline, moved into the left faceoff circle and beat Trojan goalie Cooper Ryan to cut the lead in half.

Kaske won the ensuing faceoff BSM quickly moved the puck into the Wayzata zone, where Matt Arnason scored to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The Red Knights had the best opportunity at victory in overtime when they went on the power play, but failed to score as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

A three-play shootout would decided which team would advance to the tournament consolation championship.

Risteau opened with a goal and, after Wayzata answered, Will Duda made it 2-1. Mark Kaske was stopped on his attempt to win the shootout and, after the Trojans scored to send it to an extra shooter, Jack Lawton provided the winning margin.

BSM will face the winner of Moorhead and Elk River in the consolation championship, Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
