Seven minutes prove disastrous for Red Knights

Wayzata scores five in seven-minute span of second period to rout BSM.

Ben Newhouse had an assist and blocked four shots in BSM's loss to Wayzata.

Benilde-St. Margaret's had a sizeable advantage in shots on goal (40-24) and attempted nearly twice as many shots as Wayzata (83-42). But it was a span of six minutes and 39 seconds which proved to be the Red Knights undoing.

The Trojans got goals from five different players during that stretch and turned a one-goal lead into a six goal rout, eventually finishing with a 7-1 victory to claim the title of the Sports Authority Holiday Hockey Classic.

Wayzata got things going early when Akash Batra scored just 20 seconds into the game but it would be more than 21 minutes before the score changed.

In the meantime, the Trojans set a tone for the game that would stand throughout the contest.

Despite taking a five-minute major penalty just 2:15 into the contest, Wayzata's defense stood the test. Goalie Aaron Dingmann stopped all six shots he faced during the penalty kill and his defense blocked six shots.

In the first period, the Trojans blocked 12 shots and finished the game with 27, packing the slot with players and forcing the Red Knights' vaunted offense to play much of the game on the perimiter.

Like its penalty-kill unit, which killed all five BSM power-play chances, Wayzata's power play was equally effective, scoring three times on six chances.

The Trojans were well on their way to victory before the Red Knights finally got on the scoreboard. Ben Newhouse passed the puck diagonally through the neutral zone from right to left, finding Dan Labosky at the Wayzata blue line.

From there, Labosky skated into the left faceoff circle and made a perfect pass through the slot to Grant Besse, who had virtually an empty net to shoot at as Dingmann was unable to move across his crease in time to prevent Besse's 21st goal of the season.

The third-ranked Trojans will be back at the St. Louis Park Rec Center, Thursday, when they meet the fifth-ranked Red Knights in a schedule meeting between the two teams at 7 p.m.
