Cadets put clamps on Red Knight offense

St. Thomas scored two goals just over six minutes apart in the second period and the Cadets' defense but the clamps on Benilde-St. Margaret's, claiming a 2-0 junior varsity win.

Red Knight goalie Peter Thome stopped a season-high 29 shots in the game but the hosts got the only goal they would need two minutes, one second into the second period when Joe Fewer broke into the BSM zone on the left side, shot from the left circle and scored on his own rebound.

The Cadets second goal came after the Red Knights had killed nearly all of their lone penalty of the game without allowing a shot on goal.

Late in the power play, Ben Steveken and Dan Weihrauch cycled the puck in the left corner before getting the puck to Jeff Dolen at the left point. From there, Dolen walked the puck to the top of the slot and fired through traffic to give his team a two-goal lead.

BSM would get its opportunities to get on the scoreboard but went 0-for-3 on the power-play despite seven shots on goal. The Red Knights had 3:35 of power-play time in the third period, including 25 seconds of 5-on-3 advantage, but were thwarted by the goaltending of Matt Snow, who recorded 26 saves in earning the shutout.

BSM returns to action Saturday, as it hosts Minnetonka in a 5 p.m. game at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.
