Early two-goal lead goes for naught on Hockey Day in Minnesota

The Red Knights celebrate Spencer Naas' goal just one minute, nine seconds into the game.

BSM grabbed a lead just one minute, nine seconds into the game, took a two-goal lead into the first intermisson but couldn't hold on as Grand Rapids came from behind for a 3-2 overtime win on Lake Pokegema during Hockey Day in Minnesota.

The game saw single-digit temperatures, 20-plus mile per hour winds and, at times, near whiteout conditions as the teams battled through the frigid and snowy conditions.

On just the second shift of the game, Johnny Austin collected a loose puck in the right faceoff circle in the BSM zone. He flipped the puck up the left-wing boards and Spencer Nass collected it near the Thunderhawks' blueline.

After skating into the left circle, Naas cut across the slot and slipped a backhand shot past Grand Rapids goalie Hunter Shepard for a 1-0 Red Knight lead.

BSM took a 2-0 lead with 3:11 to play in the opening period as the Red Knights' fourth line put pressure on the Grand Rapids defense.

Nate Meyer was the first BSM player in on the forecheck and he kicked the puck loose behind the Thunderhawks' net to Chris Hickok, who came out around the left side of the net and found Will Duda streaking down the slot.

After taking Hickok's pass in the slot, Duda buried a shot into the upper-left corner of the net.

It was all the Red Knights would get, however, and Grand Rapids came back with a pair of Avery Peterson goals in the second period and, with 2:31 showing on the clock in overtime, Cody Mann broke into the BSM zone on the left side, cross through the slot and lifted a shot passed Andrew Sprang for the game winner.

BSM returns home to the warmth of the St. Louis Park Rec Center, Tuesday, when they will host 14th-ranked Elk River in a game slated for a 7:05 p.m. faceoff which will be carried by Fox Sports North.
