Three-goal second period holds up for BSM win

Benilde-St. Margaret's scored three times in the second period, while outshooting Hill-Murray, 24-1, and made the effort stand up for a 3-2 win.

Although outshooting the Pioneers, 12-8, in the opening period, the Red Knights found themselves around around their defensive zone much of the game's opening 17 minutes and Conrad Sampair took advantage, putting the home team on top with a goal, six minutes, 17 seconds into the contest.

The second period saw BSM come out buzzing in the second period and it took just 1:47 before Jack Glover got the puck on the right wing boards in his own zone, made a pass through the neutral zone to Grant Besse, who proceeded to skate in on Hill-Murray goalie John Dugas and score his fourth goal of the season.

The score would remain tied for just over eight minutes before Christian Horn went back into his own zone to pick up the puck. His pass in the neutral zone deflected off T.J. Moore and rebounded back to him. He found Besse on the right side in the Pioneers' zone, got the puck back and again and buried the go-ahead goal to give BSM the lead for good.

BSM scored again with 4:51 remaining in the period when Moore won a faceoff on the right side of the Hill-Murray zone while the Red Knights were on the power play. Besse skated the puck off the boards along the goal line and found Jake Horton in the low slot, and he pounded home the eventual game-winning goal.

Despite three power-play chances in the final period, the hosts were unable to close the gap to one until the final seconds of the game when Andy Faust scored at 16:47 with Dugas pulled for an extra attacker.

BSM had a 44-17 advantage in shots on goal, collecting 16 shots on the power play, including 14 in the second period. Anders Jecha recorded 15 saves in the victory.

Next up for the Red Knights is their third consecutive road game, a 7 p.m. meeting, Dec. 8, with Burnsville at the Burnsville Ice Center.
