Drews scores twice in loss to Rogers

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Benilde St. Margaret's grab an early lead and controlled much of the first period, but two goals by Rogers in the final three minutes of the stanza, and then a four-goal third period, spelled defeat for the Red Knight junior varsity.

Luke Drews scored the first of his two goals with 5:50 to play in the opening frame with assists from Charlie Conway and Max Wendt, but Rogers scored three minutes later, added another goal 61 seconds after that and they grabbed the momentum from BSM.

After out-shooting the visitors, 14-12, in the opening period, the Red Knights held a 10-7 edge in shots in the second period and Charlie Hoch's first goal of the season, 5:20 into the stanza, tied the score.

It was two goals early in the third period that put Rogers on top for good as they scored goals 43 seconds apart and, with 12:15 to play, held a 4-2 lead.

Drews' second goal of the game, an unassisted tally, cut the lead in half 2:58 later but the Royals got a power-play goal with 3:56 to play to restore the two-goal lead and then added an empty-net goal with 1:06 to play to finish the scoring.

BSM held a 34-33 edge in shots for the game with the Royals recording 10 of their 33 shots on the power-play. BSM did not have a power-play opportunity in the game.

Charlie Hoch recorded his first goal of the season to tie the game in the second period.

Charlie Winegarner stopped 27 shots in the defeat for the Red Knights.

BSM plays a pair of 4 p.m. games the next two days as the Red Knights face Maple Grove, Wednesday, and Stillwater, Thursday.
