Red Knights JV starts fast but settles for tie with Trojans

Seesaw battle results in 5-5 tie.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's scored twice in the game's first two minutes but settled for a 5-5 tie with Wayzata in junior varsity action.

It was just 38 seconds into the contest when Mason Minor took a pass from Liam Moser before snapping off a shop from the right faceoff circle.

It would be just 77 seconds later when Jack Anderson skated out of the left corner, picked up a Gian Dante Aloi rebound and found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

The hosts maintained that lead for nearly 20 minutes before Wayzata scored three consecutive goals, taking a 3-2 lead with 5:41 to play in the middle stanza.

BSM tied the score with 2:31 remaining in the period while on the power-play as Nick Palmer moved the puck off the right-wing boards to Anderson at the top of the slot. He then found Dylan Popehn on the left side and he scored from the outside of the left circle to tie the game.

Each team would scored twice in the final 17 minutes with the Red Knights regaining the lead just 33 seconds into the final stanza.

Popehn picked up a loose puck behind the net and passed to Westan Quirk in the right circle. Moving across the slot, Quirk spun and fired a shot passed Wayzata goalie Evan Turek for a 4-3 lead.

The Trojans tied the game once again at the 6:26 mark but, with 6:01 to play in the game as Christian Beck and Wyatt Elder chased down a loose puck in the right corner of the offensive zone.


Liam Moser had the primary assist on a pair of goals in the 5-5 tie.

Elder came out of the corner with the puck, threw it towards the slot and the puck deflected into the net as the Red Knights took their third lead of the game.

Wayzata finished the scoring just 32 seconds later when Dane Robeck converted a turnover into an unassisted goal.

BSM had a 32-25 advantage in shots on goal. The Red Knights also converted one of three power-play chances and killed both of the Trojans' power-play opportunities.

Next up for BSM is another home games, Thursday, when the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders invade the SLP Rec Center. Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
