Wild third period caps win 19th-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Benilde-St. Margaret's scored three goals in the third period but Cretin-Derham Hall matched that, after taking a 3-0 lead into the final frame, to post a 6-3 win.

The big blow for the Raiders came early in the second period when Cam Kirschner and Maceo Phillips were whistled for penalties 48 seconds apart. Chuck Owens scored the first of his two goals 20 seconds into the 5-on-3 power-play and, with 25 seconds left in the 5-on-4 advantage, Jake Fisher tallied.

Owens' seconds goal, 1:17 into the final period, chased BSM started Mason McElroy before the hosts scored three of the game's next four goals.

Ryan Baird got the hosts on the scoreboard at 6:44 of the final period when he finished off a 3-on-2 rush by tipping in a Drew Stewart pass for his first career goal.

BSM cut the lead to 4-2 less than two minutes later when Peter Giertsen chased down a loose puck on the right-wing boards. He back-handed a pass to Maximos Wendt before Caleb Koskie took the puck behind the net and out the left side.

Giertsen has circled back into the slot and buried Koskie's pass for his first goal of the season.

Another power-play goal by the Raiders, with 6:52 to play, seemed to put the game away but, just 18 seconds later, Stewart moved a loose puck off the right-wing boards to Wes Berg in the right circle.

Drew Stewart assisted on two of BSM's goals and has points on five of nine Red Knights goals this season.

Berg's first shot was stopped by Raider goalie Leo Miller but he followed up his shot and banged home his first goal as a Red Knight.

Despite pressing the visitors, BSM could not get and closer and, with 59 seconds to play, Nate Chrolton scored into an empty net to seal CDH's victory.

The Red Knights, who had been out-shot, 10-3, in the opening period, came back to finish with a 29-28 edge in shots on goal, out-shooting their fourth consecutive opponent.

A 2 p.m. meeting with Holy Angels, Saturday at Richfield Arena, awaits BSM next.
