Popehn's three goals leads seven-goal first-period explosion.

ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Dylan Popehn recorded a first-period hat trick as Benilde-St. Margaret's scored seven goals in the opening 17 minutes en route to a 10-0 win over Chaska.

The first period saw the Red Knights out-shoot the Hawks, 26-0, in the opening frame and Popehn scored two goals in the first five minutes, opening the scoring just 64 seconds into the contest.

After Nick Palmer made it a 3-0 game with a shot from the right circle, the hosts scored four goals in four minutes, getting Charlie Thorpe's first goal as a Red Knight and a tally from Christian Beck before Taylor Salmon scored the first of his three goals in the game and Popehn finished the streak, completing his hat trick when he won a faceoff, got off a shot, picked up his own rebound and went around the net to score.

Salmon scored the lone goal of the second period before he and Liam Moser added third-period goals to finish the scoring.

Due to injuries and illness, BSM was down to just 12 skaters in the game, 11 of whom recorded points. Nine of those 11 players had multiple-point games with Gian Dante Aloi matching a team season high with four assists in the contest.

Logan Nowlin, who went untested in the first 17 minutes, stopped nine shots over the final two periods and earned the shutout as the Red Knights had a 54-9 shots on goal advantage.

The two teams will meet again Saturday, this time at the Chaska Community Center, with faceoff slated for 12 p.m.

Taylor Salmon had game-highs in points (4) and plus/minus (+6) while recording a hat trick.
