Late goals enable Red Knights to overcome Storm
Beck scores winner in closing minutes to give BSM its 14th win
ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. -- Nick Palmer and Christian Beck scored goals in the final six minutes and Charlie Winegarner made those goals stand up as Benilde-St. Margaret's claimed a 3-2 junior varsity win over Chanhassen.
The two teams skated through a scoreless first period and it wasn't until six minutes, 18 seconds into the second period before either team got on the scoreboard.
It was at that time that the Red Knights took a 1-0 lead when Dylan Hoen picked the pocket of a Storm player.
BSM's scoring leader created a short-handed breakaway for himself and buried his 19th goal of the season.
It took Chanhassen just 3:22 to tie the score and the game entered the final period in a 1-1 tie.
A power-play goal by the Storm just 1:20 into the final period gave the visitors a 2-1 lead, which they would hold onto for the next 10 minutes.
The Red Knights tied the scored with 5:39 to play while on the power-play as Dylan Popehn got the puck low on the left side. He made a pass through the slot and Palmer stepped up into the top of the right circle and blasted a shot over the glove of Griffin Miller.
Miller and Winegarner kept their teams tied until 2:05 remained in the game.
Nick Palmer tied the game at 2-2 with a power-play tally with under six minutes to play.
Taylor Salmon won a faceoff in left circle of the offensive zone by pushing the puck forward and chasing it down behind the net.
He carried the puck to the right side and, from the goal line, passed the puck across the top of the crease to Beck, who slammed the puck home from his position on the left side of the crease.
BSM enjoyed a 33-24 advantage in shots on goal as Winegarner won his ninth game of the season with a 22-save effort.
The Red Knights will be home again, Tuesday, to face Metro West Conference foe Waconia in a 4 p.m. game.
