Crimson turn game around in 78-second span

Maple Grove scored three goals in a 78-second span of the second period to turn a two-goal deficit into a lead and tacked on a late goal in the middle stanza as the third-ranked Crimson handed sixth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's a 5-4 loss.

Tony Paulson got the visitors on the scoreboard first when a Red Knight turnover, on the power play, at their own blueline allowed him to skate in alone on BSM goalie Anders Jecha and give his team a lead with 5:08 to play in the opening frame.

The Red Knights got that goal back on the same power play when Grant Besse scored his sixth goal of the season just 31 seconds later and T.J. Moore's ninth goal of the season, also on the power play, with 1:38 to play in the first, gave BSM a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

Christian Horn scored just 1:37 into the second period and the Red Knights would hold onto a 3-1 lead for nearly seven minutes before Maple Grove turned the game around.

Paulson began the run when he scored at 8:32 of the period and the Crimson scored on three consecutive shots with Shane Wolden scoring 36 seconds later followed by a Jordan Gross goal at 9:50.

A BSM timeout at that point stemmed the tide but Sam Valerius scored a key goal for Maple Grove with 3:11 to play in the period.

Kyle Koop kept the Red Knights at bay until Jake O'Borsky scored with 4:51 to play in the game, setting up a finish which saw the hosts get three shots in a scramble but a whistle with nine seconds to play negated an apparent tying goal by the hosts.

Koop's 32-save effort proved to be enough for his sixth win of the season. Justin Quale came off the BSM bench to make his first appearance of the season and he stopped all 10 shots he faced in the third period.

The Red Knights are now off for eight days before return to action, Dec. 28, in the Holiday Hockey Classic. BSM's first-round opponent will be Centennial in a 7:30 p.m. contest at the St. Louis Park Recreation Center.
