BSM winger gets winner in overtime

Jake O'Borsky's goal, one minute, 19 seconds into overtime enabled eighth-ranked Benilde-St. Margaret's to advance to the semifinals of the Holiday Hockey Classic with a 4-3 win over 19th-ranked Centennial.

The Red Knights never trailed in the game and took an early lead when Jake Horton converted on the first of six BSM power-play opportunities just 4:58 into the contest.

Centennial responded when Nick Larsen scored on the Cougars' first power-play chance of the game but Horton, at 6:47 of the second period, restored the Red Knights' lead with another power-play tally.

Once again Centennial responded as Adam Lovick got behind the BSM defense on the penalty kill and shot low to beat Justin Quale with a short-handed goal.

On the same Red Knight power play, Dan Labosky fed the puck from the right boards to Christian Horn in the middle of the rink and inside the blueline. Horn's had to shoot an unsettled puck but his shot fluttered past Brian Anderson and, once again, BSM held a one-goal lead.

Hans Gorowsky tied the game at 4:22 of the third period with the game's first even-strength goal and neither team could get the game winner in regulation.

Entering the game without defensemen Ryan Collins and Jack Glover, an injury knocked Jonah Johnson out of action thinning out the BSM blueline corps and, with Labosky in the penalty, forcing the Red Knights into a couple of makeshift line combinations.

BSM opened the overtime session with their big guns on the ice as Horn, T.J. Moore and Grant Besse up front and Horton and Patrick Graham on defense.

However, it was the line of O'Borsky, Alec Anderson and Nick Lauth that came up with the winner as Lauth dug the puck off the left wing boards in his own zone to Anderson and his pass set up O'Borsky to carry the puck into the left circle in the Centennial zone.

From there, O'Borsky shot far side and goalie Anderson was unable to control the shot, as it trickled down his arm and across the goalline, setting off a wild Red Knight celebration.

The victory sets up BSM with an 8 p.m. semifinal, Thursday, against Moorhead, which defeated defending state champion Eden Prairie by scoring with two seconds remaining in overtime to upset the Eagles.
