Hickok, Fleming propel shootout victory

Chris Hickok and Evan Fleming both scored in regulation and in the shootout as Benilde-St. Margaret's claimed the junior varsity title of the Sports Authority Holiday Hockey Classic with a 4-3 shootout win over Wayzata.

Jack Jablonski opened the scoring five minutes, 51 seconds into the contest when he converted a Tanner Ahlborn pass.

Wayzata tied the game just 40 seconds later and the game went into the first intermission tied at 1-1.

The Red Knights got the only goal of the second period when Hickok picked up a loose puck along the right wing boards in his own zone, skated into the Wayzata zone and snapped a shot over the stick of Trojan goalie Cooper Ryan at the 6:44 mark.

Fleming's goal came just 1:07 into the third period as Wayzata put pressure on BSM goalie Paul Lundberg. When the puck came loose, Fleming grabbed it in his own slot, turned and raced the length of the ice before ripping a shot which gave the Red Knights a two-goal lead.

Just 28 seconds later, Wayzata got back to within a goal and then tied the game with 47 seconds to play when Chad Olson knocked home a rebound to send the game into overtime, where the Trojans would own a 6-0 advantage in shots on goal but were unable to beat BSM goalie Paul Lundberg.

With the game officially declared a tie, the team's went to a three-player shootout to determine the champion and neither team scored on its first shot.

Chase Heising put the Trojans ahead in the second round but Hickok once again went to Ryan's stick side to even the score.

Chad Olson then tried a deke move around Lundberg, which was stopped, before Fleming ended the affair by beating Ryan high again.

It's the first of two consecutive meetings for the teams as they are slated to meet again, Jan. 5, at the Plymouth Ice Center, Game time is slated for 5 p.m.
